Bircotes ace Jack turns on power for GB debut

PROMISING Motorcross rider Jack Rowland has defied a triple injury setback to take a third place at the European Championships.

PROMISING Motorcross rider Jack Rowland has defied a triple injury setback to take a third place at the European Championships.

The 11-year-old, from Bircotes, has broken his arm, foot and collarbone in a stop-start last three years.

But the determined youngster, who starts at Bircotes and Harworth Community School next month, has not let that stop him making excellent progress in the sport he has pursued since the age of six.

And he got his reward at the Euros in Vernay, Holland, as he left a host of other top class riders in his wake.

"He's been riding very well but each time he's really started to come good he's been hit by an injury setback," said dad Keith.

"Jack was delighted to get a medal in Holland, especially as it was his GB debut, and he raced really well over the weekend."

"What made it better for him was that he was racing against lads of his own age group when sometimes he can be up against boys two years older."

Jack was called up to the squad after some impressive performances in the small wheel 80s of the British Summer Championships, a classification for 10 to 12-year-olds.

And he repaid the selectiors' faith with consistent performances in the four races from which an average point score is taken to find a winner.

Mr Rowland added: "Things were really close going into the last race and there were five countries in with a chance of a medal."

"But Jack kept his nerve well and it means that all his hard work has paid off."

Jack's favourite rider is the double British Championship winner Stephen Sword, who he follows on television.

The youngster's next big race is a home nations tournament called the Cooks Town Challenge in Northern Ireland, featuring some of the best in Britain.
