Worksop Town moved into third place in the league with a comfortable 3-1 over Thackley FC at Sandy Lane.

With Jake Scott serving the final match of a three match ban and Jack Barnett and Tom Burgin missing through injury and illness respectively Mark Shaw had to “shuffle the pack” especially in defence as he utilised his squad to the full.

However, the Tigers were quick off the mark, opening the scoring in the third minute when Jonathan Wafula ghosted in at the back post to slot home Conor Sellars’ cross.

Jack Hawkins and Tom Elliott then combined to set up Conor Higginson whose shot was comfortably saved by Ed Hall as the Tigers dominated the early stages.

The Dennyboys best chance of the opening 15 minutes fell to Lee Redmond as he met a cross from the left and although his shot beat Jon Stewart it lacked pace giving Connor Smyth plenty of time to clear the ball off the line.

Worksop were soon back on the attack and a Sellars’ free-kick went inches over the bar with Hall scrambling across his line.

Higginson should have made it 2-0 following good work by Sellars and Elliott, but with only the ‘keeper to beat he allowed Hall to make the block.

Mitch Husbands fired over the bar as the Tigers continued to press, then with the half drawing to a close Sellars drifted past four players only to be denied by an excellent fingertip save from Hall.

Seven minutes into the second half the Tigers deservedly doubled their lead, albeit in fortuitous circumstances; when a defender tried to clear Sellars’ corner the ball hit Sam Liversidge, the ball ricocheting into the bottom corner.

Pat McGuire fired over from 25 yards as Thackley looked to get back into the game. Then a poor clearance by Stewart gave the Dennyboys another chance, but the ‘keeper redeemed himself by blocking Ben Clayton’s shot.

The Tigers made the game safe just past the hour mark as Elliott laid Hawkins pass into the path of Higginson who unleashed an unstoppable half-volley past Hall from the edge of the area.

Minutes later only a magnificent double save by Hall from Husbands and Sellars kept the score at 3-0.

Thackley made a triple substitution but it was one of the Tigers substitutes, Kyle Jordan, who nearly made it 4-0 after Wafula ghosted past two players before cutting the ball back to the substitute whose shot hit the foot of the post.

Jordan then fired over from distance before scuffing a shot wide following good work down the right by Wafula.

With the game going into added time Thackley scored a consolation goal, which was a tremendous strike by Tom Dugdale from 20 yards that flew into the top corner.
