Nigel Clough, the Sheffield United manager, has made no attempt to downplay the significance of tonight’s game against Scunthorpe after acknowledging the race for promotion is approaching a crossroads.

United will move six points clear of seventh placed Barnsley if they beat Mark Robins’ side following Saturday’s victory over Port Vale.

Clough, whose team are scheduled to complete a hat-trick of home fixtures when Crewe Alexandra visit Bramall Lane this weekend, said: “I’ve been asked by people of this is our biggest week of the season. I wouldn’t completely disagree.

“Certainly it could be one of the most significant. The most important thing now is getting the result, not the performance although the two often go together.

“We’re not bothered where we finish (in the play-offs positions) so long as we get there. That’s all we are concerned about and a good result here would consolidate our grip on those.”

United remained fifth in the League One table despite drawing three and losing two of their previous five games before overcoming Vale.

“We get criticised at times for saying ‘that’s a good point’ after a draw. It’s taken the wrong way, that we’re not going our there to win which of course we are. But if we’d have drawn with Fleetwood and Peterborough rather than lost, we’d be in a much stronger position wouldn’t we.

“This is our game in hand and so we want to go out there and try and make the most of it.”
