Beating Fulham has given Sheffield Wednesday a welcome boost as they prepare to take on Newcastle United in the Capital One Cup.

That is the verdict of Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal, who is expected to rotate his squad for tomorrow’s third round tie.

Saturday’s 3-2 success over Fulham halted Wednesday’s six-match winless Championship streak and Carvalhal is looking build on that positive result, starting at St James’ Park.

“All coaches and teams need victories,” he told The Star. “Wins give you confidence.

“If you play well and don’t win, you know you are in a good way but confidence is not as high. When you win, confidence is higher and if you score goals it gets a little more up.

“I have my team now and believe we can improve day by day.”

With Fernando Forestieri cup-tied and nursing a hamstring problem, Carvalhal will have to make one enforced change to his starting line-up. Lucas Joao is pushing to start, having come on as a half-time replacement for Forestieri last weekend.

Carvalhal said: “Lucas is a boy but is understanding better the Championship. He gave a lot of energy to the team (against Fulham) but the most important thing is we won.”

Defensive duo Michael Turner and Daniel Pudil, meanwhile, have been granted permission by their parent clubs to play in Owls’ clash at Newcastle. Turner and Pudil are on season-long loan deals from Norwich City and Watford respectively.
