Man of the match Ross Wallace dedicated Sheffield Wednesday’s impressive 3-0 win over Premier League giants Arsenal to the club’s supporters.
Carlos Carvalhal’s charges cruised into the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup after strikes by Wallace, Lucas Joao and Sam Hutchinson in front of more than 35,000 fans at Hillsborough last night.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Wallace, who whipped in a gem of a cross for Joao to double the Owls’ lead in the first half, said: “It was a brilliant result. That was for the fans. They have waited a long time for a result like that.
“We just wanted to play on the counter attack as we knew we weren’t going to out pass Arsenal and it worked.”
Victory stretched Owls’ unbeaten streak to nine matches but Wallace, signed on a free transfer in the summer, is refusing to get carried away.
“It’s early days yet,” he said. “We have had a good start and we are going well at the moment.
“But it is up to us to keep working hard and hopefully good things will come.”
Joao led the line superbly on his own. The athletic striker gave Calum Chambers and Per Mertesacker a torrid evening and capped a fine performance by grabbing his fourth goal in Owls colours.
“I’m very happy to score a goal and the team won and that we are through to the next round,” said the former Nacional player, who had one of his tooth knocked out in last Friday’s success at Rotherham United.
