Sheffield Wednesday: Owls ace targets cup upset

Ross Wallace insists Newcastle United are big favourites to reach the fourth round of the Capital One Cup despite the Premier League club’s woeful start to the season.

The Magpies lie second-from-bottom in the top-flight after failing to win any of their opening six league fixtures. Indeed, Steve McClaren’s only victory since his appointment came in the previous round of the cup when they thumped League Two Northampton Town 4-1.

Wednesday winger Wallace told The Star: “We go into it as underdogs. They will be favourites to win the tie but we are playing with confidence.

“I’m sure the manager will change the team around and the boys will have to come in and perform. Hopefully we will take the momentum we got against Fulham into Wednesday.”

Fernando Forestieri, Wallace’s teammate, is ruled out of the trip to the North East, having played in the competition for Watford earlier this term. Wallace said he is encouraged with the partnership Forestieri has formed with Atdhe Nuhiu up front, describing it as similar to the pairing Burnley had when they went up in 2014.

The 30-year-old said: “We had big Sam Vokes and Danny Ings playing off him so it’s similar to that. We are playing a tight four. It’s the same formation and everybody knows what they are doing.

“It suits my game, I want to play in the final third. When you are a wide man not getting service in the final third, you’re often picking up balls on the edge of your own box.

“You have to hit it high, then try to run 50 yards to get up the pitch – it’s not nice.”
