Sheffield Wednesday will have to make one enforced change to their midfield when they welcome 13th-placed Fulham to Hillsborough this weekend.
Sam Hutchinson collected his fifth booking of the season in Tuesday’s goalless draw away to Bolton Wanderers, meaning he will serve a one-match suspension.
It was the 26-year-old’s fifth caution in eight outings this season but head coach Carlos Carvalhal insists he does not want the former Chelsea trainee to alter his combative style of play.
“It is the way that he [Hutchinson] plays,” said Carvalhal. “If I put a brake on him, he is a completely different player.
“If I say to him ‘take care, don’t do the tackle’ he probably won’t play. We need his full energy to press the opponents.”
Jose Semedo, Alex Lopez and Lewis McGugan will be vying for the central midfield vacancy.
Some Wednesdayites have voiced their displeasure at Carvalhal’s decision to leave out McGugan from the last two match-day squads but the Portuguese has defended his selection call.
He said: “Lewis is a player we believe has a 100% quality. At this moment, the players that we put into midfield have a good dynamic. They are playing with a very good dynamic in defence and attack. We are very happy with them. It doesn’t mean we are not happy with Lewis and other players who are not in the team.”
