Owls boss Stuart Gray has launched a robust defence of Jacques Maghoma, claiming the winger is working hard on the training ground to rediscover his best form.

Maghoma has struggled for consistency in recent weeks, prompting Gray to leave him out of the starting line-up against Wigan Athletic on Saturday. He was replaced by Chris Maguire, who was instrumental in Wednesday’s winner, so Maghoma may have to patiently wait to get another chance to prove his credentials.

Despite failing to score in 17 Championship appearances this season, the 27-year-old leads the way with assists, creating four goals for his teammates, and he looked particularly threatening in the opening month of the campaign.

Gray told The Star: “Everybody has a dip in form. Players have got two options when that happens. They either sulk or roll their sleeves up, fight and train harder which is what all my players are doing at the moment.

“It’s not just Jacques. There are other players who have probably not got to the heights that they did on a consistent level last season.”
