Sheffield United centre-forward Marc McNulty has thanked manager Nigel Clough for instilling him with confidence ahead of the League One play-offs, writes James Shield.

Clough, whose side host the first-leg of their semi-final against Swindon Town tomorrow evening, described the Scot’s finishing as “excellent” after watching him score his 13th of the season during a 1-1 draw with Chesterfield last weekend.

McNulty said: “That is good to hear and a massive compliment. It is always nice to hear good things said about you and I take confidence from that.

“The games coming up are going to be very important so Chesterfield was good for me because I hadn’t played that much football. It was good to get out there and to score was a big confidence booster.

“If the gaffer asks me to do a job, I will do everything I can to do it.”

McNulty, aged 22, has made 42 appearances since leaving Livingston during the close season. United, who visit Wiltshire for the second-leg on Tuesday evening, have never won promotion via the play-offs.

But McNulty said: “I have had a few fans say already that we don’t do well in the play-offs. But this is a new team and totally different to what has happened in the past.

“The boys are confident and that is the main thing. We see it as an incentive to be the ones to break that run.

“The manager, the boys and the staff, we want to be the ones who are successful.”
