Nigel Adkins, the Sheffield United manager, has promised not to incur the wrath of the Football League by challenging its financial regulations.

Adkins will begin applying the finishing touches to his recruitment plans early next week when his squad reports back for training at the Redtooth Academy.

“We are always looking to improve,” he said. “But everything we do must be within the boundaries of Salary Cost Management Protocol. (SCMP).”

Adkins is set to make a series of surgical rather than sweeping forays into the transfer market after pledging everyone will be granted “a clean slate.”

SCMP, which was adopted by League One clubs four years ago, limits spending on player wages to a percentage of their total turnover.

The system, which does not rely on retrospective analysis of accounts, also forces members operating within five per cent of the 60 per cent threshold to subject themselves to even greater scrutiny.
