Stephen Quinn and Harry Maguire are set for an emotional return to Bramall Lane after Hull City were confirmed among Sheffield United’s pre-season opponents, writes James Shield.
Quinn and Maguire both progressed through the ranks at Bramall Lane having graduated from the League One club’s Redtooth Academy before moving to East Yorkshire in 2012 and 2014 respectively.
United’s preparations for the forthcoming campaign also includes a game against Newcastle where former caretaker manager John Carver was last night sacked by the Premier League club having taken temporary charge following Alan Pardew’s departure earlier this year.
Coach Steve Stone has also been dismissed.
The game, which is scheduled to be the first played on United’s new state-of-the-art DESSO pitch, will also serve as Chris Morgan’s testimonial fixture following over a decade’s worth of service since his move from Barnsley 12 years ago.
United begin their summer schedule with a visit to Ilkeston on Saturday 18 July. Kieran Wallace and Che Adams both enjoyed spells at the New Manor Ground before being signed by Nigel Adkins’ predecessor Nigel Clough.
Adkins then takes his players to Cheltenham Town on Tuesday 21 July before facing Exeter City, at St James Park, on Thursday 23 July.
Newcastle, who are poised to appoint Steve McClaren as their new manager later this week, arrive at Bramall Lane on Sunday 26 July before Hull City follow suit on Sunday 2 August.
Sandwiched in between is a trip to Macclesfield Town on Wednesday 29 July.
