Nigel Adkins, the Sheffield United manager, has pledged no stone will be left turned in the search for solutions to his team’s inconsistent form after outlining plans for a detailed review of its performances this term.

And Adkins, speaking ahead of this weekend’s penultimate match of the season, admitted his own decision-making will be subjected to the same scrutiny as Bramall Lane’s first team players.

“It’s something we do every single year,” he said. “We take a long hard and very rigorous look at everything we’ve done throughout the year - good and bad - and then make the necessary adjustments. It’s a policy that’s served us very well in the past and will do again, I’ve got no doubts about that whatsoever.”

“Everything that goes on is included,” Adkins continued. “Including what we do ourselves as staff. It’s important to step back at times and analyse things in a considered manner. Because that’s how you identify areas where you can improve.”

Adkins is also set to take a decision on the futures of those squad members whose contracts expire shortly after Saturday’s visit to Coventry City. Callum McFadzean has already revealed he is set to depart while Terry Kennedy could interest Chesterfield, where Jamal Campbell-Ryce is now on loan, after failing to command a regular place in United’s squad following Adkins’ appointment in June. Despite being expected to challenge for automatic promotion, United travel to the Ricoh Arena ranked ninth in the League One table after drawing with Barnsley last weekend.

“Everything,” Adkins said, “Will become clear in time.”
