Nigel Adkins will demand every member of his squad must live within commuting distance of Sheffield United’s training complex, writes James Shield.

The decree has been issued as Adkins, who took charge at Bramall Lane last month, prepares to enter the transfer market.

A centre-half, ideally with Championship and League One experience, is known to be the former Southampton chief’s top priority although the players he inherited from Nigel Clough have all been promised a “clean slate” ahead of the forthcoming campaign.

“The manager would prefer everyone to base themselves within an easy drive of where they’ll be working,” a source explained last night. “The same as anyone else in another line of work.

“Obviously there might be exceptions to the rule. People won’t be expected to uproot their entire family if, for example, their kids are at an important stage of school.

“But, at the very least, they should have a base here. That’s the thinking behind this.”

Despite being a strong disciplinarian, Adkins’ predecessor is known to have adopted a more relaxed approach towards his team’s domestic arrangements.

Meanwhile, United have announced over 12,500 season tickets have been sold ahead of August 8th’s League One curtainraiser against Gillingham.
