Shaw plans pre-derby ‘whinge’

Mark Shaw will ensure his players take no complacency into Saturday’s derby game with struggling Retford United.

The Tigers boss plans to ‘whinge and moan’ at his youngsters, because he wants them to become heroes for the Worksop Town faithful.

He told the Guardian how he planned to guard the squad from thinking they only had to turn up to win at Cannon Park this weekend.

“I whinge and moan at them. I whinge and moan about standards, and remind them what the goal is, why we’re doing this,” he said.

“I can be pretty horrible and I hope they don’t take it to heart, because I want them to be successful and be heroes for the people who come to support them.”

“We’re building something to be here for a long time.”

While his side are flying high in third place in the NCEL Premier, Retford sit second bottom with six defeats in their last six outings.

But Shaw insisted: “There will be no complacency, it’s a derby.”

“Whether it’s the Manchester derby or the Glasgow derby, form goes out the window and you’ve got to go and win the game.”

“I don’t care if they’re top or bottom of the league, we’ll be going with the correct mindset.”
