Professional display moves Tigers into second place

One of their most professional displays of the season helped Worksop move into second place in the league, with a 3-1 win over Nantwich.

A bumper midweek crowd at Sandy Lane witnessed Tigers’ fifth victory on the trot, thanks to two typical Leon Mettam strikes and Conor Higginson’s goal direct from a corner.

After two early chances for Tom Denton, and an unsuccessful penalty appeal came and went, Tigers fell behind.

Nantwich had already tested Jon Stewart with a half volley from Steve Foster before the keeper made another good stop from a deflected free-kick but when the ball dropped to Aaron Burns he lashed itin.

Worksop’s stopper then picked up an assist on the equaliser, playing a great ball over the top and when Mat Bailey made a mistake, Mettam was there to round James and thump into the empty net.

A lightning quick break by the home side was snuffed out by Earl Davis at the expense of a corner, and Higginson sent it straight into the net for a 32nd minute 2-1 lead.

Tigers came out much earlier than their visitors after the interval, and started better too, a lovely passing move on the right ending in Denton’s shot that James saved well.

A minute later the ball was past the stopper, Mettam running onto a ball that came from debutant Craig Clay’s tackle, the skipper smashing the ball under James for his 40th league goal of the season.

No more than 60 seconds after Mettam’s strike, Muldoon’s viscious volley swerved wildly but sailed over.

Clay’s superb crossfield pass released Higginson and when he whipped in an inch perfect ball you’d have backed Muldoon to score, but he put it over from close range.

Denton and Nantwich’s equally lofty Mat Bailey traded headed chances at either end, both players off target.

Then Burns wasted a glorious chance, going in on Stewart only to shoot wide.

As Bailey retired injured and Nantwich went down to 10 men, Tigers controlled the game with ease to maintain their impressive streak.
