37 years ago today Trevor Francis joined Nottingham Forest and in doing so became Britain’s first £1million footballer.

Francis joined from fellow Midlands club Birmingham City after a prolific spell at St Andrew’s that saw him notch over 100 goals.

He was famously unveiled by Forest chief Brian Clough, who was sporting a red sport jacket - fresh from playing squash.

Francis enjoyed success at Forest, playing his part in the two memorable back-to-back European Cup successes.

But despite the big-money fee he couldn’t sustain a place in the side and eventually departed for Manchester City in 1981.

Later in his career he spent spells in Italy before returning to these shores to sign for Rangers and then ending his career at Sheffield Wednesday.
