THE family of the late Ron Swinton has reluctantly announced the end of the annual football match held in his honour, after 10 years.
His sister Julie Brighton, from Mayflower Close, in Gainsborough, said it was a difficult decision for the family to make.
“After 10 years of this enjoyable event it has reluctantly been decided to finish,” she said. “The day was about people who played football with or knew Ron, and as we are now 10 years on, it is becoming not so easy for some of them to play and the risk of injuries becomes more likely. Obviously, this can cause problems when people have to consider their work.”
She said last year’s match at the Northolme, which has proved to be the final match, was a fitting venue as Ron spent a lot of time there.
“The Swinton family sincerely thank everyone who has supported the event, in whatever way in Ron’s memory year after year, it is a great achievement and testament to him,” she added.
“We give special thanks to Mick West who consistently worked so hard to make the day the great success it always was.”
The Ron Swinton Memorial Shield will be looked after by Stan and Pam at The Ship Inn.
