Worksop Town’s title hopes have been dealt a huge blow this week, as 6ft 5ins striker Tom Denton has announced a move to Manchester.

The lofty front man, who has scored 30 times this season – his best ever tally – is leaving football after being offered professional terms by British Basketball League outfit Manchester Giants.

With only seven games left in the Northern Premier League season, Tigers boss Mark Shaw is understandably furious.

He told the Guardian: “The timing could not be worse. I don’t know where we’re supposed to find a replacement at this stage of the season.”

“There’s every chance this will stop Leon Mettam from scoring altogether, Tom did all the hard work for him.”

A spokesman for the Giants said they had high hopes for former Huddersfield Town man Denton.

“He was unsure when we called him with an offer, but I think the idea of just standing under the basket and waiting for the ball appealed to him, he won’t have to do any running.”
