Sheffield United’s Nigel Clough kept his promise to Russ Wilcox, his counterpart at York City, yesterday after allowing starlet Diego De Girolamo to re-join the Minstermen on loan.
Italian youth international De Girolamo, aged 19, caught the eye during his temporary spell at the League Two side earlier in the season, before he was recalled after fellow Blades striker Marc McNulty and Michael Higdon were injured.
But Clough promised Wilcox that they could take the youngster back on loan once the pair were fit - and, with both in contention to play tomorrow evening when United host Notts County, the Blades boss was true to his word.
De Girolamo broke the news on his Twitter account, posting: “Really happy to be rejoining York on loan... great club and bunch of lads! Can’t wait to get back.”
Tomorrow’s clash with sixth-placed County is the first of five games at Bramall Lane out of their next six, with two cup games against Southampton and Plymouth Argyle in the mix. And Stefan Scougall, United’s midfielder, believes that could prove key: “We would have liked to have beaten Oldham on Saturday [a game which finished 1-1] but it wasn’t to be.
“We want to win all our home games and we’ve got a few coming up now, so we’ve got to make them count and make a surge towards the top of the table. There are some big games coming up and hopefully we can win them.”
