Fair to say Shaun Derry has a combative reputation - but it seems to be referees rather players who are going over the top ahead of the former Sheffield United general’s return to Bramall Lane with Notts County tomorrow.
The County boss, left - whose side sit just one place and one point behind the Blades - had key midfielder Gary Jones sent off in Saturday’s surprise home defeat to Yeovil.
Unfortunately for United, but justly all the same, Jones had the red card rescinded on appeal and he can play on Friday. Stuart Attwell, no stranger to controversy, was the referee in the wrong - while another official, Andy Davies, ran riot with nine yellow cards (two converted to red) in United’s 1-1 draw with Oldham.
Sheffield’s former refs chief Keith Hackett said: “I was in the stand awaiting my turn to be cautioned!”
Hackett has raised concern about the standard of officiating at all levels on the website you-are-the-ref.com which has a Sheffield edition of The Ref Show in association with thestar.co.uk.
Premier League ref Robert Madley is in charge tomorrow.
