WORKSOP'S first season ended on a high as they lifted the Sheffield Basketball League Plate with victory over Ossett Blues in Sheffield last week.
Ian Birdsall led the scoring with 15 points for Worksop as they avenged a one-point defeat by Ossett when the teams met in the pool stage.

Luke Richardson opened Worksop's account at the English Institute of Sport in the second minute with a short jump shot before Ossett edged 6-2 ahead.

Three free-throws from Chris Days brought the score back to 6-5 before two scores from Godsway Dzoboku took Worksop into the break 9-8 up.

In the second quarter Birdsall netted all nine of Worksop's points, including a three-pointer, to keep them 19-18 in front.

The same player hit another three to start the second half and Worksop never looked back.

A 6-0 run took Worksop clear before player-coach Steve Lawes scored eight points to close the quarter at 37-22.

A Sophie Madeley three-pointer opened the final period.

Meanwhile, at the defensive end, Worksop were dominating the Blues and forcing turnovers.

When Brett Shelton swatted away an Ossett lay-up and Richardson nailed a three from out front midway through the fourth, the game was up.

Worksop closed out the game with an 8-0 run including lay-ups from Shelton and Tom Voice.

Worksop's scorers: Birdsall 15, Lawes 10, Dzoboku 8, Richardson 7, Madeley 6, Days 5, Shelton 2, Voice 2.

Lawes put the victory down to great team spirit: "All of our players are happy to do their bit for the team rather than looking for individual glory."

"To finish our first season with a trophy is fantastic."

With the exception of Richardson, who heads to university, Lawes hopes all of the current squad will re-sign for next season. The side now break from training until September.
