WORKSOP'S Robert Trem suffered UK School Games heartache as Wales missed out on a hockey gold medal at the weekend.
The 16-year-old attends Worksop College and qualifies for Wales via his grandparents.

He skippered the Welsh outfit at the School Games but could only guide them to third place.

Trem, who plays for Beeston Hockey Club in Nottingham, insists his team can bounce back after their poor showing at the Games.

He said: "We have to use this as a training experience for the European Championships next year."

"We didn't win but we are certainly getting better. Personally it is about building blocks and focusing on the positives and our strengths."

"I think that in the near future the GB squad will contain more Welsh players because we are getting better each year.

"I want to be in that team and I am trying to make sure that I am there in four years' time."

Wales got off to the worst possible start as they were trounced 4-0 by eventual winners England and were edged out 4-3 by Scotland.

And after ending the tournament on a high note by securing a 3-2 victory over Ulster, Trem immediately set his sights on gaining full international honours with Wales and Team GB.

"Getting to the Olympics in London is something that I really want to happen," he added.

"Everything is building towards that – I am not going to get lost in the idea of trying to get there but I want it and I will have to keep up with the work and try my hardest."

"I kept an eye on the Beijing Games for the GB hockey team and they were a great inspiration."

"But there were no Welsh players in the men's team so that is a great incentive to push on and make sure that there are a couple of ones there next time because I know there should be."

The Youth Sport Trust organises the UK School Games to help transform sport for young people and create volunteering opportunities at major events.

The Legacy Trust UK supports cultural and sporting activities that celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to leave a lasting legacy and is a funding partner for the Games.
