MALLEN TROPHY
GROUP C
Whitwell 143-8
Firbeck 93 all out
WHITWELL secured their passage to the Mallen Trophy finals day with a well-ordered victory over highly rated Firbeck.

Opting to bat first Whitwell's middle order batsmen Curran (40) and Draycott

(36) batted sensibly in a fourth-wicket stand of 70 against tidy bowling from the visitors, whose bowlers were well supported by excellent ground fielding.

This partnership was the rock around which Whitwell were able to post a testing 143.

In reply, Firbeck lost Robson in the first over and then their other opener to a suicide run-out.

When Shaw bowled Smith, Firbeck were in deep trouble at 15-3.

Blagg held together the Firbeck response but Jessop's deceptive away swing took three wickets for seven and Firbeck were unable to get close to Whitwell's score.
