WELBECK Men's first team finished the season in style by gaining promotion to Division One for the first time in their history.
They were fortunate that their last match was against a weakened Dore and Totley team as they needed to beat them by two more rubbers than rivals Beauchief beat Ecclesall.
The first round of rubbers started well with all three pairs winning.
Fir
st pair Tim Hart and Sandy Fulton recovered after a slow start to win 7-5, 6-1.
Second pair Steve White and Nick Sturrock had a tighter match before coming through 6-4, 7-5.
Third pair Dave Millns and Stuart Tate were comfortable winners 6-4, 6-0.
The second round of rubbers saw Dave and Stuart stuggle against the first pair, losing 1-6, 5-7. Sandy and Tim were comfortable winners against the second pair 6-1, 6-1. Similarly Steve and Nick dispatched the third pair 6-1, 6-2.
With the match firmly in the bag it was just a matter of winning as many rubbers as possible to give them the best chance of promotion.
Sandy and Tim beat the third pair 6-3, 6-4. News then filtered through that Beauchief had won 6-3. This meant that Welbeck must win the last two matches to go up.
Dave and Stuart duly beat the second pair 6-3, 6-3. So for the third week running it was up to Captain Marvel Steve White and his able henchman Nick Sturrock to win the last match of the day – the prize was a place in Division One next season.
When Sandy and Tim came off court the match against the first pair was delicately poised at 5-5 in the first set. However, once Steve and Nick knew they had to win they went into over-drive and won the next eight games, the match and promotion to Division One.
So the minnows in the sticks beat the big fish from the city to gain their place in the top division.
Congatulations to Steve White, Dave Millns, Sandy Fulton, Stuart Tate, Tim Hart, Nick Sturrock, Charlie Pick, Russell Kemp, Sean Ryan and Nick Janukowski.
