WORKSOP second XV need to play their own game on Sunday, if they are to stand a chance of ending the season with some silverware, according to captain Terry Carroll.
Too many times this season the side have allowed their opponents to dictacte the pace of play, but Carroll believes they have found success in a forwards-based strategy this season.

Carroll's side take on Meden Vale in the final of the Notts Vase on Sunday at Mellish Rugby Club near Nottingham.

The skipper hopes Worksop can replicate the form they produced in the semi-final victory over East Retford.

He told the Guardian: "The semi-final was the best we've played all season and if we play like that then let's hope we can bring home the trophy."

"We played against the Worksop first team a couple of weeks ago and we held our own, it wasn't a bad game, but we looked strongest against East Retford."

"This season we have not done particularly well in the league, we've lost when we've played the game our opponents have played, but when we have played our own game, mainly among the forwards, we've won."

"That's what we did at Retford and we need to do it again."

Carroll and the selectors are faced with a headache ahead of the final, with more players available than the maximum number who can feature on the day.

With Meden Vale second XV a relatively unknown quantity, Carroll believes the side selected is the best one.

He said: "It's been quite difficult selecting the team with the large number of players eligible to play."

"We've tried to cover all contingencies and every eventuality has had to be considered before the final squad was confirmed."

"We don't know an awful lot about Meden Vale, they've had quite a few players come from other clubs but they're still an unknown quantity."

The final will kick-off at 12.30pm.
