A YEAR on from becoming national champions, the Bassetlaw Boys Under 15s were special guests at Wembley Stadium at the end of April.
In recognition of their achievement last year as Under 15s in winning the English Schools FA National Trophy competition, the squad were invited to Wembley to act as ballboys for the England versus Scotland Under 18 Schoolboys International Match.
They were on duty all afternoon as the main match was preceded by a series of primary school Under 11 national finals for both boys and girls and an England versus Scotland celebrity match.
A Nottinghamshire team, Peafield Lane Primary School, was victorious in the boys' final.
The celebrity match was won by Scotland 2-0 and featured comedy actors Angus Deayton and Ralph Little as well as Chris Hollins, TV presenter on BBC Breakfast.
In the Under 18 international, which was refereed by top Premiership referee Howard Webb, England triumphed 2-0 in an action-packed match in which both sides had a goal disallowed and Scotland had a penalty saved.
The Bassetlaw Boys had a fantastic time at Wembley and are particularly grateful to Jack Tarr from the ESFA committee for helping to make it such a memorable day.
One highlight was to walk out on to the hallowed Wembley turf from the tunnel before the match carrying the Fair Play and national flags of England and Scotland and then to stand on the halfway line facing the Royal Box whilst the national anthems were being played.
It was a fitting finale for this talented group of players and a recognition of their remarkable achievement a year ago in winning the ESFA National Trophy.
This season, 11 of the squad have continued to play together for Notts Schools Under 16s.
Notts were successful in their opening six matches and progressed through to the quarter-finals of the national inter-county competition where they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by Durham in a match that was adversely affected by severe weather conditions.
Five players from the Bassetlaw squad have signed scholarship forms for professional clubs this year.
Connor Higginson and Lewis Croucher have been snapped up by Mansfield Town, Craig Gladwin has joined Rotherham Unite, Tom Mullen has signed for Nottingham Forest and Sam Hall is now with Sheffield United.
The boys who represented Bassetlaw as ballboys at Wembley were Anthony Crump, Lewis Jordan, Curt Smith, Ross Stallworthy, Craig Gladwin, Perry Jones (Valley School), Brandon Shaw, Sam Stretton, Lewis Bingham, Dominic Hammond and Connor Higginson (Dukeries School), Jethro Banks (Elizabethan), Tom Mullen (Serlby Park), Curtis White (Tuxford ), Danny Fox (Portland) and Lewis Croucher (All Saints).
Sam Hall and Tom Hunt were also invited but unavailable to attend
