Hillsborough hoodoo strikes again

TIGERS failed to break the Hillsborough hoodoo last night when they lost their fourth Sheffield Senior Cup final in five years against Sheffield FC.
A year on from plotting Worksop's downfall in the final as manager of Stocksbridge Park Steels, Tigers boss Peter Rinkcavage tasted defeat when the World's oldest football club triumphed 2-0.
Sheffield continued their 150th anniversary celebrations by capturing the Senior Cup, putting aside the bitter disappointment of a penalty shootout loss in the UniBond First Division playoff final on Saturday.
For Tigers it was just one of those nights when nothing went their way.
Sheffield had two good chances and scored them both. Tigers saw one effort come back off the inside of the post and a host of chances go wide or over the bar.
Worksop started brightly and in the first 15 minutes it was one-way traffic. They forced a corner in just the second minute, Dave Cockerill struck the post with a venomous shot five minutes later, Andy White's back-post header was saved and on 13 minutes came perhaps the best chance they'd get all game.
Former Tiger Stuart Copnell was caught napping as Ryan Ludlam and Steve Robinson worked a quick free-kick. Robinson swung in a dangerous cross and centre-back Andy Boyce climbed highest to head goalwards, but Sheffield 'keeper Jamie Holmshaw acrobatically tipped it over the bar.
Boyce saw another header float wide minutes later and Sheffield suddenly came to life, closing Tigers down, squeezing the play effectively and making the most of their possession.
On 27 minutes Chris Dolby was allowed to jink his way into the Worksop box and he crossed to the back post where an unmarked Gavin Smith had the simplest of headers to give Tigers custodian Dave Ratcliffe no chance and make it 1-0.
Straight from the kick-off Sheffield won the ball back, Vill Powell powered his way down the right and swung the ball into the area but depite losing both centre-backs, Copnell could only head over the bar.
Tigers struggled to create chances like they did in the early stages and their frustration manifested in a rare loss of temper by striker White.
The big man was fouled in the Sheffield half and reacted angrily, earning himself a ticking off from referee Mr Bell.
The second half began in much the same fashion as the first for Tigers.
After just two minutes, captain Paul Stansfield won a free-kick just left of centre, 25 yards out. Kevin Sanasy lined up for a shot on goal but drove the ball into the legs of the Sheffield wall.
On 48 minutes Cockerill took the ball on his chest on the left side of the area, swivelled and blasted just wide of the far post.
White was put into space by Kevin Davies on the left wing, made his way into the box, but was blocked by makeshift defender Rob Ward.
Steve Akers scrambled clear of a challenge on the right and curled a deep cross to the back post but the late arriving Cockerill was blocked and the ball rolled out for a corner.
Ratcliffe had to be quick to react when Kevin Dawson allowed the ball to drift over his head with Powell threatening and although the striker appeared to clatter the 'keeper as they went for the ball, no free-kick was given and Ratcliffe needed prolonged treatment before he could continue.
If the goalkeeper was rattled he did well to shake it off and was back in action minutes later, diving to his right to palm away Paul Smith's free-kick.
On 67 minutes White returned to the field after receiving treatment for a cut lip and found himself with the ball at his feet in acres of space, but after powering his way towards the area, he dragged his shot wide of the post.
Two minutes later Tigers were dead and buried.
Ratcliffe made a decent stop to deny Darryl Winter, but the resulting corner eventually fell kindly to Gavin Smith and he finished well, putting the ball low past Ratcliffe and doubling Sheffield's lead.
Sanasy was too vociferous in protest at a decision by a linesman and was booked by the referee before Rinkcavage sent on a third striker in Jermaine Palmer, in place of Steve Akers.

The replacement involved himself immediately, tricking his way past his marker and picking out Cockerill at the far post, but the big winger's header drifted out of play.
Ludlam played a clever ball into the box for Palmer with 11 minutes remaining, but his shot-cum-cross missed the goal and the support players.
Winter went in the referee's notebook for tripping Robinson, who was making a dangerous run towards the area, but yet another headed chance for White sailed over the bar.
In the five-minute period of injury time Boyce headed over from a Robinson set-piece and Stansfield was cautioned for a late challenge on Davey Peter, the last frustrated kick of the game for Worksop's captain as Mr Bell brought proceedings to a close shortly after.
A disappointing way for Tigers to end the season but after a top-10 finish in the league, the foundations have been laid for a promotion assault next season.
