TESNI Ward's life is a numbers game.
The 17-year-old is number one in the UK in shot put, number two in javelin and number three in discus.

Her aim is the 2016 Olympics, although she has an outside chance of making 2012.

She combines her athletics career with her academic studies at Worksop Post 16 Centre, and got 13 GCSEs, seven of them As.

But the Olympic hopeful receives just £500 a year in funding, which is just enough money to buy one javelin.

Tesni grew up in Wales, but moved to Worksop eight years ago.

She has only been competing in field events for three years, but has shown enough raw natural talent to get to the top of the junior ranks.

The former Worksop Harrier has won both the Nottinghamshire County and Midland Counties Under 20 Championships in discus and shot.

She represented Notts in the CAU Inter-counties Championships and made the final of the javelin competition, won bronze in the discus and recently took two golds and a silver in the Welsh U20 championships.

In February she was shortlisted for the final five of the Notts Sports Personality of the Year, won by Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington.

Despite all these achievements, the teenager struggles to find financial support.

"I am on funding, but it's only enough for one javelin a year," she said.

"And the funding removes my chances of getting grants from other companies."

"A javelin is £500, a discus costs £100 and then you have shoes, clothing, competition fees and hotels."

"My parents pay for my petrol to competitions and hotel rooms, but we're struggling on the money side of things."

Tesni trains four times a week, putting in two and a half hour sessions at her Sheffield training base, which is a 45 minute drive from her Westerdale home.

The youngster has had to dedicate herself to her three chosen disciplines and misses out on the lifestyle of a normal teenager, but with such lofty aims she knows it is necessary.

"I think my friends get quite sick of it, because I can never go out to parties at the weekends, although they do support me."

"But you need quite a few years of strength and technique training to get to the top, and although I will be trying to get to the 2012 Olympics, 2016 is more possible because I will have been training long enough," she said.

She has been invited to compete in the Aviva World Trials in Birmingham, and is likely to be the youngest competitor in the throwing events.

Last weekend Tesni competed in the England Athletics Under 20 Championships in Bedford, winning a bronze in the discus, gold in the javelin and bronze in the shot put.

Delighted mum Sara told the Guardian: "Most athletes try all year just to qualify for the championships, but to pick up three medals at the same championship is exceptional and I believe that she is the only athlete to have done this, certainly this year."
