A BOUGHTON farmer lost thousands of pounds worth of corn in a blaze believed to have been started deliberately.
Eight hectares of the crop were destroyed in a field off the B6387 and it took fire crews from Edwinstowe, Retford, Tuxford and Mansfield 40 minutes to extinguish after they were called to the scene at around 3.25pm last Wednesday.

Watch Manager Adam Moore this week warned parents about the dangers of letting their children play in corn fields.

He said: "Corn fires spread rapidly and can be difficult to get under control. Luckily we have had some rain recently, so this fire didn't spread as quickly as it could have done, but we believe it still caused between £4,000 and £6,000-worth of damage to the crop.

"This fire was close to a built-up area with lots of children around. I would urge parents to prevent their children from playing in corn fields as a fire could easily overtake a child, resulting in serious injury or worse."
