Army cuts wrong

How ironic that the British Army will deploy more personnel to deliver a secure Olympics in our capital than there are fighting in Afghanistan. There is no doubt that our magnificent troops will take this additional burden in their stride.

I never dreamed that a Tory-led Government would plan to decimate the regular army by 20,000 and to reduce it to a mere 80,000 on its high altar of ‘cost cutting.’ What they are proposing will not only reduce the Army’s capacity to defend this nation, but to reduce its effectiveness in future overseas conflicts and its role in NATO. The folly of this proposal will come to haunt us. In an uncertain and dangerous world the Government should be adding to the numbers. The increases could be funded by the cessation of overseas aid to countries who neither need or deserve it.
