Tia Kirk, eight, has type one diabetes and leaving her mum, Renata, in a morning was always hard.

But now Tia skips down the corridors of Ryton Park Primary School, straight to the office of administration assistant Kathryn Simes.

“She is a wonderful woman and a credit to the school,” Renata said.

“It was Tia who nominated her for the Guardian Rose but I want to say thanks.”

“She looks after Tia everyday, on school trips and makes her feel safe.”

Renata explained how the outstanding work of Kathryn dawned upon her when after a day at school Tia was worried and not herself.

“Tia was uneasy. Kathryn had been called to a meeting so was unable to help on this occasion,” Renata added.

“It was because she is so used to having Kathryn there,”

The youngster is now really enjoying her time at school and Kathryn has a huge part to play in her school work and helps Tia with her injections.

Tia presented Kathryn with the Guardian Rose and said: “Thank-you for looking after me all the time.”

A surprised but happy Kathryn said: “It is a nice and unexpected surprise.”

“It is much appreciated and it is no problem looking after Tia.”

It wasn’t long before Tia was back skipping down the hall and Kathryn went back to her office before one last word from Renata.

“I just want to give her a big hug. She is brilliant.”
