Worksop: The Canch collects Green Flag Award

The Canch in Worksop is celebrating its status as one of the very best parks in the UK, after picking up its first ever Green Flag Award.

The accolade, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country.

A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards and has excellent facilities.

Coun Julie Leigh, cabinet member for neighbourhoods at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “The Canch is the green heart of Worksop and we are absolutely delighted that it has been awarded Green Flag Status.”

“This award recognises that Worksop is benefitting from a green space of the very highest quality and I hope that the town is very proud of their park.”

The Canch Park consists of two distinct areas. Memorial Gardens on the south bank of the River Ryton was opened by King George V in 1928 in remembrance of the men of Worksop who died in the First World War. On the North side of the Ryton is an area for active recreation with a skate park, Adizone outdoor gym, a multi-use games area and the popular fountain splash pool.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award scheme manager, Paul Todd, said: “A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who through their dedication and hard work have helped to create these fantastic places for everyone to enjoy.”

“Quality green spaces are a vital resource for communities and that is why it is so significant that we have handed more out than ever before.”
