Worksop: St Augustine’s Primary School celebrates Veterans Day

St Augustine’s Primary School marked the centenary of the start of the First World War by hosting MP John Mann’s annual Veterans Day.

On Friday 4th July, the contributions and sacrifices made in 1914 were remembered as veterans and councillors were invited into the school, on Longfellow Drive.

Pupils showed their respect by clapping the veterans as they walked around through the halls and presenting them a handmade medal.

John Mann also received his very own medal.

A school spokesperson said: “We wish to say a great big thank-you to all the councillors and veterans for making this year’s Veterans Day very special for the children and staff.”

“The children did us proud and shared their amazing work.”

After the event, coun Ian Campbell Tweeted ‘Fantastic afternoon at St Augustine’s School for the annual Veteran’s Event.‘

‘It was wonderful seeing the children dancing with the veterans.’

Leader of Bassetlaw Council, coun Simon Greaves, also Tweeted ‘A great afternoon for local veterans at an excellent school with brilliant pupils and staff. Well done everyone.’

Some of the veterans who took part in the ceremony also returned to the school the following week on Wednesday 9th July to say how much they appreciated the reception they received and also spoke to teachers and children.
