Worksop: Local woman to celebrate 100th birthday

A woman from Worksop will be celebrating her 100th birthday this weekend.

Isobel Larkin has lived in Prospect since the early 1970s and is still a great member of the community.

Until only last year, Isobel could be found at St Joseph’s Social Club enjoying a glass of beer and a game of bingo on a Sunday lunchtime.

Isobel loves knitting and often creates baby coats and hats for youngsters at Bassetlaw Hospital. She also donates her items to local charities.

She was just over two pounds when she was born all the way back on the 24th August 1914.

Her parents were told to wrap her in a blanket, leave her on the fire hearth for warmth and pray she made it through the night.

Isobel spent most of her years with her husband Arthur who she married in December 1935. They went on to have four children together and she also has five grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

She worked most of her married life and retired from Bairnswear (which later become Courtaulds) when she turned 60.

Her family feel that she has had a long life because she’s never been afraid to have little luxuries, a little of what she fancies has always done her good. Isobel has always been partial to a fried breakfast and a glass of beer.

Grandaughter Claire said: “I’m hugely proud of having a grandmother who’s turning 100. It’s amazing to think of what has happened in her lifetime- TV, space travel, monarch changes!”

She will be celebrating the landmark birthday with family and friends at a tea party.
