Worksop: Incinerator campaign group raises concerns over affect on local organic agriculture

The Worksop Against Incineration campaign group held their latest meeting at the Grafton Hotel in Worksop.

The group is against building of the proposed waste incinerator on the site of the old recycling centre on Sandy Lane.

As well as concerns about health, food chain, environment and the effect on businesses, other concerns discussed were that the site is in a smoke-free zone, near a conservation area, could block a public footpath, could have weaknesses in the drainage system and could affect underlying aquifers.

Plans were discussed what to do if and when an application is submitted and how to inform residents, clubs, schools, businesses, of the proposals.

Concerns were expressed about the effect on surrounding agriculture, especially organic farming.

Alternatives to incineration such as anaerobic digestion and zero waste handling systems were covered.

The group also discussed fund-raising ideas for September and possibilities raised include a coffee morning, and a pie and peas racing night.

The date for the group’s next meeting has yet to be arranged.

However, it is hoped that when it is called, Mr Shlomo Dowen, co-ordinator for UK Without Incineration, and an incinerator technical expert will both be guest speakers.
