Worksop: Campaign to save town branch of the British Legion looks to gain new impetus

The Guardian is backing a campaign to help save the Worksop branch after it was announced earlier this year that it was facing closure due to dwindling membership.

“To help raise the profile of the campaign again, we are having a stall on Worksop Market place on Saturday, 30th August in an effort to recruit new members,” said Elaine Hopkins, the Legion’s regional fund-raiser for the East Midlands.

“We are also looking some more Poppy Appeal sellers, in readiness for the forthcoming annual poppy appeal and so we hope people will come along and see us.”

The Lights Out event in Worksop Market Place marked the moment 100 years ago when Britain officially entered World War I.

This year also marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day in World War II .

And to that end, the British Legion is planning a second major event in Worksop this year.

The Festival of Remembrance is intended to take place at the North Notts Arena on Saturday, 25th October.

The festival will remember the fallen men and servicewomen of not just of the two world wars but all subsequent conflicts the British Armed Forces will have been, or are still, involved with.

The are several aims of our Festival of Remembrance,” Elaine continued.

“We want to provide an opportunity to remember the fallen servicemen and women in all conflicts around the world.”

“We will also use the event to launch the 2014 Poppy Appeal.”

“The event will also promote the work of the Royal British Legion in Worksop and raise funds for Legion.”

As with the Lights Out event, the Festival of Remembrance will be something to involve the whole community, either through being part of the festival itself or simply supporting the venture through sponsorship or by people attending on the day.
