THE driver of a school bus which crashed into a low bridge, slicing its roof off and injuring children, has been fined £80 and banned for a year.
Wayne Oliver, aged 38, of Laughton Road, Dinnington, drove his TM Travel double-decker bus into a railway bridge on Whittington Road, Barrow Hill, Chesterfield, in March.
Chesterfield Magistrates Court heard there was a 13.3ft height sign on the bridge and a notice in the bus, which read ‘double decker bus must not operate between Barrow Hill and New Whittington due to bridge’.
Oliver had only driven the route with a single decker previously.
He admitted driving without due care and attention and was disqualified for 12 months, fined £80, ordered to pay £35 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
