South Yorks: Restructure for local policing services

South Yorkshire Police are set to reorganise their local policing structure.

From 2015 they aim to combine their neighbourhood resources and provide greater flexibility in tackling community issues.

Several key policing functions including response and safer neighbourhood police will come together to form multi-skilled local planning teams which are to be known as LPTs.

The teams will serve the same geographical areas covered by current safer neighbourhood teams and will be based in existing police buildings.

The plans are being led by chief superintendent Rob Odell.

He said: ““The Force has to make difficult decisions to deliver significant savings to its budget but we’re committed to retaining a dedicated neighbourhood policing service in every community.”

“The Force is working hard to implement the local policing teams from spring 2015 and detailed consultation is now taking place with all staff whose roles are affected.”

To help these plans, there are proposals to create a new centralised CID function. Local detectives and some current central resources would be based at two hubs where they would deploy to different areas in the county.

South Yorkshire Police said this would give them more flexibility to respond to demand.
