SMOKEY’S Field in Langold will be built on after councillors gave the go ahead for a new development.
Bassetlaw planning committee has granted permission for a 92 home development on Cemetery Road and Doncaster Road.
The plans were objected to because it means the recreation ground, used by Langold Old Boys FC, would be bulldozed.
But the committee heard that the pitch hasn’t been used since the developers carried out exploratory digs.
Developers have pledged to pay for a new junior football pitch in Langold Country Park and also to improve the senior football pitch and facilities in Costhorpe.
Councillors made it part of the planning conditions that the work on the pitches would be completed before the development starts.
Hodsock Parish Council chairman Michael Goulding told the committee the council backed the plans.
He said dozens of youths congregate on the land drinking and intimidating older people who live in the area.
The development would help bring the village into the 21st century, he added.
Coun Annette Simpson welcomed the development.
“I think Langold is a fantastic place. There is so much opportunity and so much character for what appears to be a nondescript village when you go through it,” she said.
“The development that this will make will help to improve it (the land) looking at how awful that area is.”
