A VOLUNTEER has spoken of the “truly amazing” response from the community after lead thieves left a village church with a £38,000 repair bill.

The Standard ran a recent story detailing the horrendous run of thefts at All Saints’ Church in Misterton after it was targeted eight times in as many years.

There were two thefts just 48 hours apart during the summer and because of the repetitive nature of the crimes, the church’s insurance company would only pay out £5,000 of the £38,000 claim.

But volunteer Jane Moffett said £6,025 has been received in donations - in just over three weeks.

She added: “To say we are delighted would be an understatement.

“So many people have rung us or stopped us in the street to express their utter outrage that the church has been targeted by thieves and may have to close. It is truly amazing. The support we are getting is wonderful and also very humbling.”

In addition to donations, a number of events have been organised at the church over the next two months to raise more funds.

She continued: “However the fight for survival is far from won and, as the weather deteriorates, the appeal becomes more urgent. We are working very hard to raise the £33,000 needed.”

The first event - ‘send a message to an angel’ - will take place on Saturday 5th November, between 10am - 3.30pm, where people can write special messages to their guardian angels for £1 and these will be tied to balloons and released from a net.

On Friday 18th November a prize bingo session will be held in the church rooms on Church Lane, from 7pm.

More events have been arranged and will be announced.
