BARLBOROUGH

BARLBOROUGH Heritage and Visitors’ Centre: Along side our permanent displays our feature display for October/November will be Barlborough through the War Years. To coincide with Armistice Day Heritage Manager Tony Bak is creating a Remembrance Room. On display will be photographs and war records of Barlborough men killed in the 1st and 2nd World Wars. The Centre is always looking to add to its archives and if anyone has anything that would enhance our displays and would be willing to donate or loan items we would love to hear from you. WHITWELL

WHITWELL Local History Group: On 27th September, Mr Malcolm Dolby gave the second part of his talk Along the River Trent - the Motorway of Saxon and Roman times. He resumed his walk at Newark Castle, owned by the Bishops of Lincoln, but a Royalist stronghold during the Civil War. Romans and Vikings had built along the banks and recent finds have included Viking armoury, a 9th Century Roman strap end, and a penny from the reign of King Alfred the Great. The walk ended at Blacktoft Sands. Mr Dolby brought his talk to an end by showing a picture of a Latin inscribed stone tablet and asked “Did a Roman soldier of the 11th Legion bring this to Lincoln?” The AGM will take place on 11th October to be followed by a film presentation by Mr Harold Streets.
