DUKERIES Decorative Fine Arts Society: The Society met for the first time in 2011 for its AGM. This was followed by a remarkable talk from Bertie Pearce on Wonder Workers and the Art of Illusion; the history of magic through art and pictures and through demonstration. In what can only be described as an hilarious and witty tour-de-force Mr Pearce performed some of the tricks that his pictures were illustrating, using members of his audience as unwitting accomplices. The first book on magic appeared in 1584. One of the greatest of all illusionists was Jean Robert-Houdin, a French clockmaker. He developed a series of brilliant new tricks such as levitating his son. Britain also produced some outstanding magicians such as David Devant, the first President of The Magic Circle, and Jasper Maskelyne who used the art of illusion to conceal Alexandria and the Suez Canal from German aircraft. The society’s next meeting is on Wednesday 2nd March at 1.55pm in St Anne’s Hall, Worksop, when Dr Robert McManners will speak about Shafts of Light: the phenomenon of mining art.
