Firefighters spent more than three hours battling the flames which engulfed a large outbuilding on the Highfield Road allotments, known locally as Pigeon Field.

Several livestock perished in the fire, which broke out just before 5pm on 6th March.

Three fire engines were tackling the blaze at its height, with crews from Maltby, Edlington and Rotherham in attendance.

They used water jets to put the fire out, leaving the scene at 8.30pm.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said a pony and some goats were also being kept on the site. But it is not known if they were harmed.

The RSPCA was informed of the incident.

Investigations are ongoing into the cause of the fire.
