The future of Seafield Logistics, one of Worksop’s biggest haulage firms, is uncertain today after going into administration.
News broke today (Wednesday 11th June) that joint administrators had been called in to handle the company’s affairs.
Seafield’s head office is based on Claylands Avenue in Worksop but it had sites across the company.
Two sections of the business were immediately sold off, securing 110 jobs.
A statement from joint administrator David Riley, of Grant Thornton UK LLP, said: “The stakeholders of Seafield Logistics have experienced uncertainty for some time and the two sales provide a positive outcome.”
“We are delighted that we have been able to secure in excess of 110 jobs as well as provide continuity to the customers.”
The side of the business dealing in bulk powder transport, incorporating sites in Winsford and Middlewich, Cheshire and Immingham, Lincolnshire, was bought by Abbey Logistics Group.
While the warehousing section, also based at Winsford, was sold to Lomas Distribution.
But the fate of the Worksop operation and its workforce remain unclear.
The future of Seafield sites at Aylesham in Kent, Castleford in West Yorkshire and Ashbourne in Derbyshire were also thrown into doubt.
Nobody at Seafield Logistics in Worksop was available to comment.
But it is understood the company had been running at a significant loss.
The last available accounts, for the 18 month period up to 31st December 2012, show sales of £41.3 million but a loss of £395,000.
Just last month, Tropicana renewed its logistics contract with Seafield.
Other customers include Wilkinson, Premier Foods and Lafarge/Tarmac.
The company was recently operating a fleet of more than 120 vehicles across 17 locations and managing more than 450,000 square feet of warehousing.
An anonymous truck driver told the Guardian before today’s announcement: “All staff got a notice last Wednesday saying the company had gone bust and they were looking for a buyer.”
“Everybody is upset. We are obviously wondering whether we have got a job at the end of each day.”
“I should be able to find work elsewhere because there are plenty of local hauliers around.”
“One colleague who recently lost his job at Sherwood Distribution had started work with us - and now this happens.”
