Shirley and Walter Smith, of Westerdale, fell in love back in 1954 when they walked home from a night out at The Savoy and were married at the Priory Church in 1956.

The pair, who have two children and three grandchildren, were delighted to receive their telegram from the Queen congratulating them on their diamond wedding anniversary on St. Patrick’s Day.

Shirley said: “We have a wonderful marriage and would both happily do it all again.

“We say I love you every day, and we are never too proud to say sorry- that is the key to staying together.”

Walter was in the army at the time of his wedding and had to return home on a 48 hour pass to attend the ceremony, before travelling back next day.

“Our reception was at the Greyhound Hotel and our meals cost five and threepence- that’s 27p in today’s money,” said Walter.

“We had a late honeymoon in London, travelling to see Shirley Bassey in concert. She was just starting to make a name for herself back then- we had a fantastic time, I remember.”

Shirley and Walter celebrated their anniversary with family and friends with an overnight stay at The Crown in Bawtry.

Walter added: “We’d like to thank everyone for their cards and presents and for making our day so special.”
