Christopher Savory, 23, pulled his stunned girlfriend Laura Thirlow aboard the famous steam train as bystanders cheered him on in a secret arrangement at Pickering Station on Sunday, March 13.

The heritage line volunteer produced a specially-made diamond ring from AJR Jewellery in Dinnington and was thrilled when his partner of five years accepted.

Christopher said: “I’m so glad that the proposal was made possible thanks to railway staff- I couldn’t turn down an opportunity like that.

“It all went brilliantly. Laura sat in the driver’s seat of the Scotsman and after I had proposed to her the driver blew the whistle in front of a crowd of cheering people.

“Laura is not a railway enthusiast like me- you could say she’s a railway widow. In the past I’ve spent more time on the railways than she would have liked. But I thought this was a great way of making it up to her.

“I’m very grateful to staff at the North Yorkshire Moors railway for helping me pull it off.”
