Worksop: Pupils take to stage of star-studded movie

Young budding actors at Worksop’s Acorn Theatre have been involved in the making of a star-studded movie.

More than 30 lucky pupils were selected to be extras in the filming of Testament of Youth which features Games of Thrones Kit Harrington and is produced by David Heyman - the man behind Harry Potter and the Oscar-winning film, Gravity.

The excited performers have spent the last three weeks on set in various locations alongside the film’s stars including Dominic West, Emily Watson and BBC’s ‘Merlin’ Colin Morgan.

“It’s been great to offer this exciting experience to our pupils and we have been so proud of their professional attitude on set,” said Young Theatre Company director Hayla Hawes.

The Young Theatre Company production tells the true story of Vera Brittain who left Oxford University to serve as a nurse and then struggled to resume her life after her brother, fiance and closest friends were killed on the battlefield.

The children were fitted with elaborate costumes such as corsets for the girls and Edwardian haircuts for the boys.

One of the scenes the youngsters were involved in included a steam train, filmed in Keighly, Yorkshire.

“When we stepped onto Keighley Station platform with it’s steam train, old fashioned porters and First World War soldiers, we all just gasped in amazement,” said pupil Joseph Taylor, aged ten.

“It was like stepping back in time, and it’s going to look fantastic in the finished film.”

The young stars are now looking forward to seeing themselves on the big screen when the film is released in cinemas later this year.

Any local young budding performers who want to get acting, The Young Theatre Company has spaces in their weekly theatre classes for their new term beginning on April 28th.
