A man who stole from his own mother has escaped jail.

Keith Hartley, 38, of Ryton Road in Worksop pleaded guilty at Worksop Magistrates’ Court to stealing £14 from Shirley Holmes’ purse.

The court heard Mrs Holmes had £50 in £2 coins in her purse and Hartley had initially asked to borrow £2 to get to college.

However, when Mrs Holmes later checked her purse, she found seven coins had been taken.

Hartley was given a 12-month community order with 12 months of supervision and drug rehabilitation.

He was also given a restraining order to stay away from his mother’s house for 12 months.
