Arran Brooks, a self-employed electrician from Carlton-in-Lindrick, was left “devastated” after the theft, which happened in the early hours of Tuesday, April 26 outside his home.

The hardworking 22-year-old needs the tools, which included three costly industrial drills, in order to work.

Though Arran’s kit was insured, he says he may be in hot water financially after having to pay excess fees and purchasing new equipment.

Arran told the Guardian: “Someone knocked on my door at about 4.30am that night to warn me that my van had been broken into.

“I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“I have had to go out and buy new tools, and it looks like I’m going to have to fork out hundreds. I don’t have a choice as I need them to make a living.”

Arran’s dad, Craig Brooks, believes police should be doing more to tackle these type of thefts in the Carlton-in-Lindrick area, which he says are becoming increasingly common.

He said: “This type of theft from vans has been happening a lot around here.

“The most upsetting thing is the response we get from the police force, who just give us a crime incident number.

“I believe that if they had carried out more of an investigation, they might have found evidence that could have helped Arran.”

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: “We were called at around 6am on Tuesday, April 26 to reports of a van having been broken into and tools taken.

“It appears they broke in through a window.”

The spokesman added that residents can put steps in place to secure their vehicles.

These include keeping expensive equipment in a storage box that is fixed to the floor of the vehicle, marking all items with a visible marking system and taking belongings with you were possible.

Anyone who heard or saw anything suspicious that night should call Nottinghamshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 74 of Tuesday, April 26 2016. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
