'More unrest' at Bassetlaw A&E following controversy

FALLOUT from the recent controversy surrounding Worksop's A&E unit is ricocheting around Bassetlaw Hospital, claims a senior medical source.

FALLOUT from the recent controversy surrounding Worksop's A&E unit is ricocheting around Bassetlaw Hospital, claims a senior medical source.

Since the Worksop Guardian revealed the department was threatened as part of a six-month clinical services review, a series of top level talks have taken place at the hospital.

"We have won the first battle, but we haven't won the major war yet," the source said.

"Hospital consultants met about a week after news of the threat to the A&E broke in the Worksop Guardian, and there was unanimity in terms of supporting the action that had been taken."

The source added: "Afterwards, there was a meeting between Trust chief executive Nigel Clifton and chairman Margaret Cox, and that was quite frank and forthright."

Describing the Worksop Guardian's coverage of recent events and the ballot organised by John Mann MP as "first class", the source said it would now be interesting to see how the situation develops over the coming months.

"I am very pleased and delighted with the result of what has happened. The new Keeping The NHS Local guidelines contain some things which are quite favourable to Bassetlaw Hospital," the source said.

"It will be very interesting to see what happens over the next few months."

This week Mr Clifton has revealed the Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Trust is applying for foundation hospital status, which, if successful, would give the hospital greater decision-making powers.

"There is a question mark over Bassetlaw Hospital and foundation hospital status and I think it will be very difficult to judge," the source said.

"I think the board would like to have got much of this decision making out of the way before applying for foundation status."

The source added: "You could propose that foundation hospital status might make it more difficult to alter things at Bassetlaw, but I'm not sure."

" I think we will just have to see what happens."
